My students need a class set of the New York Times Bestseller book, Wonder, by R.J.Palacio and the audio CD to help teach tolerance, compassion, kindness, and taking a stand against bullying.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students come from diverse situations. Some families are migrant farmers in the area and many students speak English as their second language. We are a Title I school with many students on our free and reduced lunch program. My students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, I strive to keep learning fun, creative, meaningful, engaging, and highly motivating.
Our school district is run on the motto "Growing and Learning Together." I work hard at bringing my classroom into the 21st Century so that students will be prepared to grow and learn for their best possible future.
In addition to homelessness and poverty, many of my students have learning challenges. I teach general education, learning handicapped, autistic, RSP, students with ADHD, and GATE students. I want my classroom to be flexible and have the needed resources for personalized learning.
My Project
My project is for an audio CD and class set of the book "Wonder", which is about a 5th grader with a facial deformity who struggles to find inclusion and acceptance in his elementary school classroom.
My students need exposure to stories that deal with students who may be different from themselves with examples of kindness and empathy to learn from.
Teaching students with special needs or kids who just don't fit in, who struggle to find inclusion among their peers, is a challenge. Other students don't understand why they're "different" and have very little patience in interacting with these students. It is heartbreaking to see, and I would love to create a safer and more inclusive classroom for all students. Doing a literature unit on this topic will meet academic, social, and emotional needs in the classroom.
I have been wanting a class set of "Wonder" for years and am hoping next year will be the year I get to introduce this moving book to a class full of 5th graders. Your donation will change the lives of all of my special students ... especially the lives of those who struggle with being "different."
