My Students
Fifth is a pivotal year for kids socially. They are beginning to come into their own and wonder how they fit in with the rest of the school. They are anxious about leaving the comforts of their elementary schools to navigate the waters of middle school. My students come from struggling families and will be in classes with students who have so much more. I want them to feel comfortable in being themselves, learn to stand up for what and whom they believe in, and see the value in true friendships.
My Project
Fifth graders are an unique cast of characters. They are beginning to question how they fit in with the rest of the school They are developing meaningful friendships. They are learning more about the world around them. This is all while anxiously anticipating what will happen next year when they leave the comfort of their elementary school, heading onto middle school. A new school. New kids. New personalities.
The book Wonder, by R.J.
Palcio, shows students the same story from different points of view. It is the perfect book for 5th graders to build empathy for others.
This is a book that I have read out loud for the past couple of years. Watching the reactions of my students from surprise, to cheering, to tears is a magical experience. We only have two copies of the book in the class. Allowing each student to hold the book in their hands, following along can help the struggling readers with their fluency. Having a copy that they can re-read their favorite parts allows them to delve deeper into a book. It is my hopes that they will fall more in love with the book then just from hearing it read to them.
