The Wolfepak Doing Research

My students do independent scientific research and need many reusable supplies such as small aquariums with supplies to make them useable; as well as an egg incubator to hatch chickens and supplies to culture bacteria.

I teach and am also the director of research in a math and science magnet school that is new in Loudoun County Public Schools (This is our third year). We are housed inside another public high school (Dominion High School). Our kids do independent scientific research in their junior and senior year of high school. Our very hard working students plan and carry out a research topic of their passion that will go for two years. Each student is doing unique research so equipment varies for each project. Much of this equipment is expensive and/or just small stuff that adds up. We haven't been in existence for long so don't have stockpiles from previous years. The equipment that I'm requesting will be used this year for specific student projects, but can be reused in future years for other projects. For instance one senior student is attempting to produce some nanofibers from a natural body component and then use that to culture cells so that there is an alternative method for burn victims to regrow skin. She needs chick embryos to get fibroblasts. She needs an incubator to raise the chick eggs. Another student is trying to see why sea urchins live so long and is going to try to transfer that protein to zebra fish embryos and see if there is an effect. She needs the zebra fish tank kit. Another student is investigating the problem of estrogen in wastewater getting to our rivers and streams and affecting the development of fish as well as other wildlife. He needs the tanks and air pumps to set up simulations as well as the culture media to check the components of the water that the estrogen is affecting. Students learning genuine science has always created the life-changing experiences that we want our kids to have. We are trying at the Academy to fund as much as we can, and our students are fundraising to pay for their research as well, however, you can assist them by covering some of the experimental equipment demands that they have. You will make a difference in our nation's need for scientists!
