The Wishing Chairs: Flexible Seating for Creative, Energetic, Focused, Wonderers

My students need a variety of seating options to help them build stamina and focus. A set of Hokki stools and a set of Double Deckos will benefit both my current and future first graders.

My Students

I teach a diverse population of first graders in a high need, neighborhood school in Chicago. Our school is a small, close-knit community with one class per grade, Pre-K through 8th.

These six and seven year-olds enthusiastically love learning, and are supported by their hard-working parents who deeply value education.

My students speak English, Ukrainian, Spanish, Arabic, Polish, Russian, Portuguese, and Bulgarian. Many are working hard at becoming biliterate, bilingual, or trilingual. My first graders are energetic, eager, question-askers whose worlds expand through the adventures of reading.

Our classroom is full of activity, movement, and conversation. We learn from our similarities and differences in linguistic abilities, family structures, socioeconomic status, ethnicities, and academic abilities. My goal is to facilitate a safe and engaging learning environment that fosters independence and self-regulation. I hope to inspire lifelong learners.

My Project

We are requesting 6 Hokki stools and 3 Double Decko chairs. The first graders will use these seats every day. Young students need to move their bodies around often and thrive when they have choices. Movement is critical to student development.

Sitting all day is challenging, and these chairs will help our most active learners remain focused and do their best work.

Hokki stools are ergonomic seats that transform stationary sitting into an activity. Students will use these stools in our Writers' Workshop area. They will also be able to use a stool any time their body needs it. They are ideal for collaborating, brainstorming, and improving focus. These stools are perfect for students who cannot sit still. Students will be able to move without distracting their peers, avoid conflict, and remain focused on their learning.

The Double Decko chairs will revitalize our classroom library. Students will have an opportunity to burrow in and cozy up with a good book independently, or with a partner. Expectations are high in first grade. First graders are expected to begin at the reading level C/D and end at J/K. These comfy chairs will help the first graders while they practice and master those eight levels.

I look forward to using the Hokki stools and Double Decko chairs to help create a comfortable learning space that supports all students' successes in first grade. There are endless possibilities of how we will put the Hokki stools and Double Deckos to use in our classroom!
