My Project
Working at a non-traditional school (incarcerated students) is both thrilling and challenging. It is most thrilling because for many of them it is the first time in years that they are going to school on a daily basis. As an educator of 20+ years, seeing the proverbial light bulb turn on with so many of the students makes every day exciting and new. Furthermore, because of their background, there is so much that they do not know, and I have a blank canvas of which to help shape and develop them for a more successful future once they have served their time. That being said, we do not receive the same funding as traditional schools in North Carolina and that makes teaching very challenging.
My computer is sorely outdated and quite literally sounds like a SpaceX rocket taking off.
Additionally, the printer has had to have new drivers installed multiple times because they do not want to work with my state issued computer. The tools requested, a new computer and printer, would allow me to publish students' works for them to hang in their rooms and show their parents or guardians with pride on visitation days. It would also promote their learning in ways that they never thought possible and help develop a sense of pride that what they do matters and that they can achieve anything that they truly desire with hard work and support.
