My Project

I will be going into my fourth year of teaching, all at the same school. I began teaching the year after COVID shut down schools and saw how much students needed to be around their peers but also how much they needed an engaged teacher. I also quickly realized what the pandemic did to traditional learning, and many students became too reliant on technology. This greatly impacted their attendance because they didn't see the need in coming to class when all of their assignments were online. Because of this, I have spent the last two years getting back to "old-school learning," and have seen a positive impact on attendance. I currently teach 5 Financial Literacy classes and 1 government class in the fall, and 5 Oklahoma History classes and 1 AP Government class in the spring. The building I teach in, and my room, is very old. We have been hoping to get whiteboards in our rooms, but have not been able to yet and have chalkboards. I like to write my daily instructions for students, so a whiteboard large enough for them to see would be beneficial. We have also gotten away from technology in my class, and do almost all assignments on paper. My students (especially Oklahoma history) love maps, so the colored pencils will be put to use weekly if not more. We also do handwritten notes, and I like to make sure my students have all the pencils and paper they need so they don't miss anything because of a lack of resources. As I said, the room is very old and the chair and standing mat would help keep me more comfortable as I am on my feet all day and don't have much comfort when sitting down.
