My Students
Making scientific concepts come to life is an important task. Using quality literature can transform difficult science topics into meaningful lessons for students. This project uses a variety of high-quality fiction and non-fiction trade books to make it easier to teach fundamental science concepts.
I teach fifth grade in a small rural school in North Carolina.
I am responsible for science instruction for all 50 fifth grade students. My students have limited outside experiences, as many come from lower socioeconomic families. I try to provide a plethora of experiences for my students, with literature and hands-on activities, to make science come alive and spark their interest in learning more about their world.
My Project
I use literature in every subject area and know that a quality book can spark an interest in a topic for a child who may have otherwise been reluctant to show interest. The books selected for this project will provide students with an opportunity to explore a variety of scientific areas, making difficult science concepts more manageable, increasing students' understanding and awareness. Using the books to pique students' interests, I will also combine reading instruction with science teaching in an engaging manner.
Harnessing students' interest in science is important, as we are preparing students to be future leaders.
It is my responsibility to ensure that students understand fundamental concepts and are well-prepared to tackle any scientific challenges that are presented. From protecting natural resources, to the value of organic gardening, to protecting yourself from contagious diseases, this project seeks to provide students with opportunities to explore these and other areas through literature.
