Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work at an absolutely incredible school. Positivity and hope for our students' futures run amok, even in the face of adversity. It's a high needs area: our school is 95% free and reduced lunch, 90% minority, and 85% English Language Learners. My classroom reflects these demographics in such a beautiful way.
We're a diverse group and together we spend the day learning about fifth grade topics, and through interactions with each other, we learn about the world around us.
My Project
My students love to read. They love read alouds, independent reading and sharing books with others. As we are reading, students try and connect with the characters. However, sometimes there is a disconnect. Most books that we have in our classroom are about white, middle class, straight people. My students are not reflected in the books we read, culturally, linguistically or in their various identities.
Our classroom is incredible.
It hosts eight languages and more personalities and cultures than you can imagine. I want my students to learn in an environment where diversity is encouraged, celebrated, and validated and in a classroom where those values are reflected in the books we read.
In order to dream big, you first have to see yourself in that future position. My students need to see minority characters overcoming odds, becoming president, being confident in who they are, and celebrating diversity with all of these books.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
