My students need pedometers to gain an understanding of how active they are during the day and to try various activities to increase their activity level.

My Students
Being a PE teacher is the best job in the school! I get to work with all of the grade levels and follow the students through their elementary school years. I love encouraging physical activity. Using pedometers my students can work smarter, together, to gain a true picture of their daily activity.
My school is located in a north county suburb just outside of St.
Louis. My students range in age from 5 to 12 and come from all backgrounds. We have a diverse group that learns from each other and our differences. They are an excited group of kids that benefit from daily exercise and lots of movement. They are goal setting kiddos that I believe would be encouraged by taking control of their own health and setting and crushing their activity goals. We are a school of just about 400 kids who work hard and benefit from movement.
My Project
The students can begin by asking themselves" how many steps do take during a typical PE activity?" We would record these estimates. The students can then complete a PE period with the pedometers on and see how active they truly were. We can chart their individual results. From there I can have older classes set individual goals and try several different methods to meet their goals. The students can also ask "What can I do to increase my activity level?". The younger kids that would have difficulty recoding their individual scores can work in teams. I would record their results and teams would compete for the most steps. The students would be working smarter, together to determine ways to increase their step activity. We would also monitor changes that naturally occur along the way. These would include energy level, how they are sleeping at night, appetite, focus in the classroom, fewer behavior issues and even clothes being a looser fit.
I am a firm believer that physical activity makes a difference in the whole child.
They are able to perform better in the classroom and maintain focus. The behavior issues lessen when children are able to move and be active. I also think that the social aspect of walking or running with friends and talking while doing so is important to social development. Not to mention the health benefits. I believe that my project could impact many areas of school in only a positive manner.
