My Students

I have a new class this year called Nightmare Literature. It is available to juniors and seniors once they have passed their ELA Regents. They can choose which English class they want to take after they pass their Regents exam. Choice increases interest.

This class is a popular choice because students get to read science fiction books about a corrupt future, ghosts, vampires and zombies: Basically everything that is hot on social media right now.

The problem is the limited funds available to buy all of these cool books. I need your help to maintain their interest and enthusiasm for reading.

My Project

We have just started reading The Walking Dead Graphic Novel Volume 1. The kids love it! I have never taught, let alone read a graphic novel before. I was really skeptical that comic books had literary merit. Well, now that we are reading this one, I have found them to be amazing. The kids have in depth discussions and heated debates about plot, characters and the author's motivations. This is why I want to get copies of the other volumes of Walking Dead. It is cheaper to purchase the compendiums than each volume individually. I plan to let my student borrow these books to be able to continue reading on their own.

I have found a book that my kids love.

I want to be able to help them continue reading and deepening their love of reading. When they read, they work on their analyzing and critiquing skills. They need both of these skills to be college and career reading. Please help me to foster college and career ready citizens. Who knows, maybe they will be the ones saving you from the zombie apocalypse!
