Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If the revolution will ever be televised, all my kids would see it! In teaching a 3rd grade bilingual classroom in California, I have come to realize more than ever the need to incorporate new technology into my daily instruction.
It surprises me how my students all can speak about emails, text messages, and You Tube videos they have seen. It seems like a no brainer to include these types of audio-visual modalities in my daily teaching but with the recent state cutbacks in funding, my school is unable to afford to provide our students with the same technology that other more affluent schools are able to.
I currently do not have any working computers in my classroom and have been not been able to incorporate the many amazing web and video resources that my English Language Learners need. In teaching my students about descriptive writing, I would love to use the LCD projector to display visuals from around the world so that they can write about what they see. I would also love to incorporate short movie or video clips that are related to the current unit we are on. Teaching about the difference between the Metric and US Customary unit of measurement would be much more engaging if I could show a You Tube video of Bill Nye the Science Guy!!!
In today's educational reality, the importance of learning how to type has surpassed the importance of learning how to write in cursive. Students in today's world don't only need to be able to master today's technology, but they also need to be taught using these technologies. The days of the filmstrip are long gone. A new technological revolution is upon us. Please help empower my kids to use these technologies to create a more humane and just world.
