The Very Hungry Readers

Help me give my students a library of Eric Carle and other classic children's books in both English and Spanish!

My Students

My students attend an urban PK- 8th elementary school. This school year I see two classes of PreKindergarten students, on top of my classes of kindergarten and first graders. These young students have spent much of their life living and learning during a pandemic. Now that they are in school they are LOVING coming to the library. They are so much fun. Each visit to the library is an hour long and we read, sing, dance, color, and pick out books to take home.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.

My school is one of the most diverse schools in our city. My students are amazing!

My Project

My students love reading books. My youngest learners are very excited to read books on their own. As we are able to read a few books each time they come to the library, I have been mixing in classic stories with the Monarch Nominees that I read each week. Our library has a beautiful mural on one end of it and I trying to read books with the lovely storybook characters that are painted on the wall, such as Mo Willems Pigeon, the Rey’s Curious George, Eric Carle’s Hungry Caterpillar, Norman Birdwell’s Clifford, and Maurice Sendeck’s Wild Things.

To hear award-winning stories come alive is a treat for them, but to take them home and share with their families is even better!

It will be so fun to be able to read and share these books with my students. Of course, once I read one of these fun stories, all the students want to check them out. It has been sad to realize that we do not have many copies of these books in our collection. The copies we do have are well loved (meaning worn out). For example, our copy of the Hungry Caterpillar is the 40th Anniversary Edition and is very old at this point as the 50th Anniversary Edition came out in 2019.

Many of these classic books have storylines that are perfect for new readers and those new to reading in English. After we read it in class a few times, it will be so fun for the students to take these books home. My students will be so excited to see these books and share them with their families. I want my students to know who the storybook characters are who decorate our beautiful library.
