I am an ESL teacher in Worcester, MA at a low-income, high-need elementary school. I teach English Learners in grades 2-6 that all have varying native languages and different levels of English language proficiency. In my experience working with English Learners I have found that they are hungry to learn and to become bilingual and multilingual speakers.
My students are eager to come to school each day and better their English skills as they often become the translators and liaisons for their own families.
Our main focus is to boost each student's literacy skills. Providing students with Chromebooks will allow them access to quality literacy building activities while also practicing and learning vital technology skills. Technology in the classroom will provide experiences that these students most likely will not have outside of school.
My Project
Due to the demands of college and career readiness, technology plays a critical role in the education of our children. As an ESL teacher, Chromebooks will allow my English learners to practice typing, editing, collaborating, and creating digitally which are only a few of the vital skills that will be required of them. In addition to learning these skills, Chromebooks are essential for English learners as they allow these students to engage in a variety of literacy activities that improve their English while also providing support in their native languages.
With five Chromebooks, my English learners will have access to technology daily which will allow them to engage in powerful listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities.
These activities will facilitate my students' acquisition of English while also allowing for the opportunity to teach them how to be responsible digital citizens.
In addition to practicing everyday literacy skills and creating collaborative projects digitally, the five Chromebooks will be used to prepare my English learners for the annual assessment of English proficiency that must be taken online. Without these computers, my students will not be prepared for what this mandated online assessment will require of them. These Chromebooks will impact my students in countless ways and are essential to their success as young learners. Any donations are greatly appreciated!!
