I teach in the Chicago Public School District on the far south side. The students within my classroom come from diverse backgrounds and cultures which influence the culture of my classroom.
Within this school, ninety-seven percent of students come from predominantly low-income households.
These students come to school every day to absorb as much knowledge as possible so that they can make the world a better place. Making the learning environment as fun, safe, and engaging as possible will set the kids up to achieve more.
My Project
Puzzles have numerous benefits to children. Some of them include improving self-esteem, pattern recognition, memory, and fine motor skills through puzzles. All of these skills are crucial to their brain development.
This project will help students develop problem-solving skills that they can use both in and out of the classroom.
Students will always work with a partner to complete a learning puzzle it will also improve their teamwork and communication skills since they are working towards a common goal.
Since each of these puzzles is focused on specific reading and math skills; they are able to help students of all different abilities. Students will be able to successfully complete the puzzle of a skill they might struggle with. The reading puzzles will help them improve word recognition as well as spelling abilities which will help them become better readers and writers. The math puzzles work on essential skills that they do not get much practice with.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
