The Ugly Truth About Our Economy: GDP and Lego Towers

Help me give my students a realistic picture of the economy. In this activity, students create miniature economies and produce towers made out of LEGOS.

My Project

Trying to make sense of economic indicators right now can be perplex: unemployment is down, but inflation is still stubbornly sticky. Interest rates are higher than they’ve been in two decades, but stock indexes are closing at record highs. So, what’s really going on?? Majority of 11th-12th grade students don’t have a clue what’s going on and have this Distorted perception about our economy and how it impacts them directly. While in high school, students don’t pay rent, utilizes, insurance, etc. Money received from their part-time jobs is used for their wants instead of needs. Parents pay for the needs. Teaching students about how the economy works and its impact on personal, business, and government choices are essential for their survival.

These items will help my students understand how the economy works by creating miniature economies and producing towers made from LEGOS.

They will focus on the below topics

Real GDP

Unemployment Rate

Production Possibilities Curve

Real GDP per Capita

Standard of Living

Productivity

Economic Growth

The activity will help students make real-life choices based on off the economy. It will be based off what is going on in the US economy at this moment.

Children will learn to use money for personal choices.

• Should I increase my work-force number or reduce it?

-Government choices

• Should we increase the interest rate or cut it?
