My Students

My students love books!. They have had more opportunities to take books home and read them due the generous donors and Donors Choose. I want to continue their love of reading and expand our classroom library. I want each and every one of them to get as excited about reading new books as I do.

My students love learning and love the opportunities that learning will bring them in the future.

They enjoy reading and ask me each day to take books home. They attend a small school that provides a nurturing environment for them and they are thriving! They work well together and challenge each other. Many of them come from families that are financially struggling and from families that are busy making ends meet. Most of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch and we were still able to win the California Distinguished Award. They are proud of their accomplishments and this recognition by the state. They know that if they work hard, no matter where they come from, they can achieve greatness. Therefore, they are happy and excited to see what a new school day brings each morning when they walk into my classroom.

My Project

I am asking for a set of 25 copies of Sign of the Beaver for my students to work together on and learn from and talk about. This story is an amazing one with wonderful ties to our social studies unit on Native Americans and exploring new frontiers and while reading it, we will continue to make connections to other areas of the curriculum. None of my students have read this amazing story by this incredible author. The cd's that I have asked for will allow the students to listen to parts of the story read aloud by a professional reader and enhance their reading comprehension and fluency skills. The last set of resources that I requested are teachers' guides for the literature sets that I currently have. They contain pre-reading activities, vocabulary, and cross-curricular connections. They will help me teach the novel and allow the students to better understand what they are reading.

Reading is a ticket back in time.

The novel that I am requesting will take them back in time to the 1700's. My students will live in the wilderness and form relationships with Native Americans there. Help these children take this adventure back in time!
