The Tories vs The Patriots

My project needs 30 copies of the book Katie's Trunk and 30 copies of the book The Boston Coffee Party. Both are nonfiction books of events that really happened to colonists during the beginning of the Revolutionary War and give students real life views from adolescents viewpoints of both Tories and Patriots. So, when studying the Revolutionary War, reading these books help the students see and feel the war with the help of real young people who experienced this war first hand.

I work at an inner Indianapolis Public Elementary School which is an English as a Second(ESL) Site. Francis Bellamy Elementary School, #102 has a school population around 300 students of which 85% qualify for free lunches. It is also a Title I and a Reading First school. I am one of the three ESL teachers who works with 40 plus of the 100 ESL students. This coming year, I will will be working with the ESL students in 1st and 5th grade. While I will work with the new English speakers and the 1st grade ESL students in the high risk reading group in pull out groups, most of the time I will be co-teaching with the teachers in the 2 first grade and 2 fifth grade classes in the classrooms. The fifth grade teachers and I want to add nonfiction books to the Social Studies units to make history come alive and be more interesting. Many of the ESL students, as well as the native-English speaking students, struggle with the Social Studies textbook and need extra teacher help in understanding the text. Also, some of the concepts are difficult since the history covers the 1700's, which is very different from their lives in the 2000's. To aid in making the early history of our country become more meaningful, I want to add high interest nonfiction books that cover the history units that the students are required to study. They are written at a lower grade level so that the ESL students and other struggling readers can read and understand the content without teacher help. Since the books, I have selected are picture books, the illustrations will aid in the students gaining meaning. However, these books are well-written and have vivid words as well as some figurative language. In addition, Katie's Trunk is a true story told from a young Tory girl's perspective, while The Boston Coffee Party is a true story that is told from the viewpoint of two sisters who are Patriots. It also contains a letter from Abigail Adams from her husband concerning the Coffee Party. I feel that the books will give the students a good chance to see both sides of the issues which were brewing and caused the Colonist and English to go to war. I believe that reading books like the ones requested will increase understanding of the issues that caused the Revolutionary War, as well as make history more alive to the students since they will see history from they eyes of children their age. With your help in buying these books, the students will develop a thirst for history!
