My students need basic tools like pencils, markers and paper as well as art supplies to record their learning, express their creativity and engage in academic content, using the classroom as a professional shared workspace.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of 9 to 11-year-olds. 75% of my students are English Language Learners and about that many receive free and reduced lunch. 10% of my students are diagnosed with a learning difference that requires lesson modifications that benefit the whole class. My students come from the Philippines, Mexico, El Salvador, China as well as the Bay Area. They have an incredible range of interests and learning modalities and are driven by voracious intellectual curiosity. They take great initiative in self-directing their learning- often asking me to order or check out books, going to the public library themselves, sharing resources with each other and finding new, kid-friendly online research resources. They most love field trips, reading and hands-on learning.

My Project

Every professional relies on specialized tools to help them to complete their work with precision. A farmer, a doctor, a chef, a mechanical engineer, an artist all require specific equipment. And so too do young scholars.

Our classroom needs to be outfitted with the materials for student engagement with all subject areas.

Each student needs journals to organize and express their thinking for reading, writing and math. They will use art supplies such as glue sticks, scissors, markers and linocuts to design dioramas and posters, masks and puppets to represent their understanding of social studies and science units of study. They rehearse, revise and publish their writing over and over again, growing their comprehension and expressing their ideas.

Our classroom is a workshop. Any given day you will find students self-directed, revising comic strips or flip books about capybara sub-species or graphing the pattern relationship between geometric tiles in a mandala. Students use the infrastructure of the classroom to rehearse essential critical thinking skills. It is imperative that our classroom is stocked with materials that will facilitate students demonstrating their mastery of content.
