The THINKING Classroom

Help me give my students whiteboard easels to create a THINKING CLASSROOM to do rich and engaging mathematical tasks.

My Students

My students are Lakota youth who live on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. These resilient students strive their best to balance life amidst a beautiful culture and challenging issues. These students care deeply about their families, communities, and future generations.

Here on Pine Ridge, things can be tough.

These students need access to the tools that will help them become leaders and problem-solvers for their Lakota Nation, the Country, and our beautiful Mother Earth.

My Project

Whiteboard easels paired with rich mathematical tasks will transform my classroom into a flexible, student-centered environment where students are inspired, motivated, engaged, synergetic, deep thinking mathematical problem solvers. Whiteboard easels promote standing which optimizes thinking and active engagement for all students. The erasable nature of whiteboards encourages risk-taking and creative problem-solving. Vertical whiteboard easels will facilitate the movement of knowledge between groups. If a group gets stuck, they can passively look to the work of others to get a hint or actively choose to interact with another group. This "knowledge mobility" keeps groupwork flowing and promotes a safe classroom culture of learning. Groups will be randomized daily to also promote group cohesion, diversity and inclusion, and a positive class culture that innovates and exceeds expectations.

My students will be building knowledge and creating powerful connections to the math and each other with White Board Easels!

"Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12" by Peter Liljedahl is my guide to these unique research-based practices that create the optimal conditions for learner-centered, student-owned deep mathematical thinking and learning.
