My 30 students need a class set of "The Things They Carried" by Tim 0'Brien. Powerful honesty and the ability to relate to the things they carry makes this an ideal title
We all have things we carry from book bags to emotions; some are heavier than others. This book will give my students the opportunity to learn how to carry the load that is placed upon them. For those who have not read this powerful book, The Things They Carried, please read it and share it with my high school sophomores.
My students are from a lower income school in Virginia; many come from families who do not have additional funds for books, as a result, our school system does not have additional funds to add to our bookroom.
I would love to share a more modern, relatable story with them.
My Project
By reading books the students can relate to and that challenge them academically, they are able to increase their reading levels; a much needed skill that will transcend all subjects and last for a lifetime. I love including historically accurate fiction as it broadens their world as well as their vocabulary, reading and comprehension.
By providing books to students you make a huge impact in their acceptance and understanding of the world around them.
These students will move on to bigger and better things, and I intend to arm them with the skills and understanding of themselves to ensure success.
