The Testing: A Book for Reluctant Readers

My Students

I teach in a diverse high school in upstate New York. We have a high poverty rate. I have a great group of students this year, but not all of them love to read and write.

Last year, I was able (with the help of Donors Choose) to get my kids to read The Hunger Games and they loved it!

Some of them asked for suggestions for further reading and I steered them towards Divergent. And they fell in love with that series, too. They have been asking me for more suggestions since September, but I haven't been able to find anything to sustain their interests. Then, I found The Testing. I read it in 2 days. It was that fabulous.

My Project

My students asked about the book I had been reading so voraciously. When I finished it, I set it on my desk and another student immediately asked to borrow it. It has been in circulation since then. I only have one copy and they are all fighting over who gets to read it next. It is amazing to see teenagers fighting over a book. I have not seen this much enthusiasm for reading in a long time. I would love to be able to get a class set so we can read it. In the long term, they will be able to use this literature on the English Regents. In the short term, this book will help them with critical thinking and higher level learning.

With your help, I can get 30 more copies so all my students will be able to read and enjoy it.

I can't wait to discuss the political implications of this literature and see what they think about it. Please help me to continue their love of reading!
