I am a second year elementary teacher that has witnessed the emotional and financial hardships that are dealt to students through no fault of their own. These students work hard to achieve mastery of the standards taught and have large dreams that require a solid learning foundation.
This year my class has worked so hard to develop relationships with their classmates.
My students love games and have a competitive spirit that cannot be matched. We spend morning meetings talking about what is important to each of them and what interesting things have happened since we last spoke. We spend our last 30 minutes of the day playing games. During this time when many students feel isolated, we have created a family that begins the day with a joyous "hello" and a mournful "do we have to go" at the end of the day. I cannot wait to see their accomplishments as they have overcome so many obstacles this year alone.
My Project
As we hopefully return to school in the fall after being remote for over a year, students are unfortunately going to be lacking some required skills for success in middle school math.
VersaTiles is a learning tool that is "screen free" and will allow students immediate feedback.
This class set of VersaTiles will be perfect so that each student will be able to work independently or participate in teacher led instruction that goes a step further than paper and pencil worksheets. VersaTiles is an active alternative to practice workbooks. It combines the challenge of a puzzle with standards-aligned skills practice, helping students develop fluency of key concepts and skills.
This independent learning tool also allows teaching/learning to continue as I am working individually with students that need the most instruction due to struggles with an online learning environment that they were thrust into at a moments notice.
