My Students

Many of my students see little purpose in studying Biology. The story of Henrietta Lacks and her contribution is amazing & horrifying. Her story brings relevance to bioethics and social/racial prejudice.

My students are quite diverse.

We have students that are bussed in from two cities along with the regional students in the rural, suburban area surrounding the school. My school is a Title I school, which means that there is a high percentage of students who receive free lunch/breakfast. For many of them, school is the only place where they are encouraged to have ambitions of being successful in school and in the workplace. The students also vary racially; more than 50% of the students are of a minority background. It is a great melting pot that can really foster good classroom conversations and promote awareness about others unlike themselves.

My Project

The story of Henrietta Lacks is amazing because scientists were able to use the cancer cells from her tumor to successfully grow (culture) human cells in the laboratory (also known as HeLa cells). The horrifying thing is that the doctor that took the cells from the aggressive cervical cancer did not tell her he was doing that, let alone get permission or provide compensation. The cells continued to survive and make medical history long after Henrietta Lacks died. I would be able to have students of all levels read this book in class or at home, relating to several units in Biology, also promoting literacy (a great need in our school). This would be a memorable assignment for students as they are exposed to the prejudices in society and how bioethics are needed now and in the future.

Please consider supporting this project.

Eyes will be opened to the real world, the harshness and the need to be informed. For some, this might be the only book about science that my students would ever WANT to keep reading. Please help them to see that science is anything but BORING.
