This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I want my students to fall in love with reading. I want to start a book reading club using a a "steampunk" novel that combines fantasy, historical fiction, fantasy and science-fiction. I believe the book I have chosen, "The Looking Glass Wars", will spark and sustain my students' interests.
We are a 7-12 urban middle/high school.
Over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. We want our students to develop a life-long love of reading. My goal is to find high interest books for them to read and discuss. If my students can become independent readers, they will take a huge step towards achieving the skills they will need for a successful life.
My Project
"Steampunk" is a rising genre of literature. It typically combines Victorian-era settings, steam driven technologies, historical characters, classical plot lines, and alternative histories. The novel I have chosen, "The Looking Glass Wars", is a reworking of Lewis Caroll's classic book "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass". In this book, Alice is the rightful heir to the throne of Wonderland, but because of an evil relative, finds herself living as Alice Liddell in Victorian England. My students enjoy fantasy stories, and I feel that this one will appeal to this interest.
My plan is to recruit a group of students who will want to read and talk about the novel outside of class time. There will be no tests, no homework, just reading and discussing. I plan to hold book discussions outside of class time, probably one day a week during their lunch period. We can meet away from the rest of the students in a section of our school library for this purpose.
I hope you will feel as excited about this project as I am, and as my students will be.
We will update you on our progress through DonorsChoose and through a blog we will keep on our book club so that you can see how my students are using your gift.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.
