it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I often hear people claim that teenagers don't read books anymore. But I have found that when I am able to get a fast paced, high adventure story into their hands, especially a book they can keep for their own, they become excited, eager readers.
I teach in an urban high school with all of the problems associated with low income urban environments.
My students deal with poverty, hunger, violence, and despair while trying to get the education they need to escape these problems. They need to read, but books are too often a luxury their families cannot afford. Our reading club is designed to meet their need for literacy.
My Project
Each week, we meet to discuss our books. I chose the genre of Steampunk literature as the basis for our club because it appeals to their tastes. Steampunk literature is a type of science fiction writing that typically features steam technology, alternative histories, 19th Century setting, and high adventure stories. Often the protagonists are young people around my students' age.
The students love reading and talking about these stories. It is a joy to see them eagerly devouring these books and asking for more. In the process, they increase their reading fluency and critical thinking skills.
They learn these skills without knowing that they are being taught anything more than to enjoy a good book.
Your donation will give my students the gift of reading, the gift of using their imaginations, and the gift of sharing their insights with their peers.
Increased literacy will help them in all parts of their education because reading is foundational to academic success.
