This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Steampunk is the latest reading craze. It combines fantasy high adventures and Victorian era inspired technology. The heroines and heroes are typically young people who have to rise to adult-sized challenges. All of this has created the greatest generation of readers this side of Harry Potter.

Our students go to an urban, 7-12th grade public school.

They come mainly from working families. Over 90% of them qualify for free or reduced school lunches. I believe our reading club will help to create a group of excited readers who will "infect" their classmates with the reading bug. Many of our students come from families where owning a book is often a luxury they can't afford. My plan is to give the members of The Steampunk Reading Club a book of their own to keep.

My Project

Steampunk literature is exciting and imaginative. Those who are into Steampunk have a myriad of ways to excite and express their imagination through costume play, machine and robotic creations, and sharing ideas with fellow Steampunk fans. Your donation will open up a new world of adventure and learning for our students.

Economic poverty too often leads to poverty of the imagination.

Our students sometimes lack a vision to take them beyond the streets of their neighborhood. The imaginative worlds found in fantasy novels like the ones you will provide our students can lift their vision to a world of possibilities they have yet to imagine.
