My Students

I spend my days with kids who have been frustrated and defeated by school, so I need to break through their barriers before they can learn. Engaging, hands-on activities help attract their interest and unlock their true potential!

I teach at a "redirection school" for students who have gotten off track in traditional schools, with discipline challenges and failing grades.

Simply put, the majority of my students have not found success in school. Whether they have struggled to stay out of trouble or pass their classes, they have gotten the message that they are not meeting expectations, not doing enough, not fitting in. My students come from very diverse backgrounds, but most have faced some kind of hardship - whether it is a critical financial situation, unstable home life, a crisis of one kind or another, or just the weariness of never quite achieving what seems to come so easily to others. While at our school, we hope to wipe the slate, even if just a little, and give students a chance to have a different set of experiences. We hope those experiences will then form the foundation for a new path - one of success and opportunity!

My Project

In seventh grade science, we learn about forces and motion. I want my students to explore, first hand, the effects of friction, inertia, and momentum, and calculate, using precise scientific equipment, velocity, acceleration and force. Using the smart track and energy car, they will be able to explore Newton's laws of motion, conservation of momentum and energy, friction, acceleration and related topics in a fun way. The timer and photogates will allow them to collect accurate and repeatable quantitative measurements similar to data gathered by scientists in a true lab setting.

With this equipment, student won't just read about scientific principles, they will be guided by their own curiosity to design and conduct scientific investigations, collect their own accurate data, and draw conclusions from evidence, leading to more effective and thorough learning.
