This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Being able to obtain an additional xylophone in our music classroom will provide more opportunities for students to study mallet pitched percussion. Having another soprano xylophone will make it to where students can share more equally amongst the class, and it will help increase pacing of instruction thus helping with learning acceleration. In our music classroom, students are applying their understanding of how to accompany themselves while singing or rhythmically speaking, as well as making melodic and rhythmic connections when performing on such instruments. This approach has lead to an academic renewal with student voice and ownership. Right now we have one soprano xylophone and the curriculum we use advocates for at least two to fully implement the music that aligns with our state music standards.

This project will allow our school to start expanding our depth of instruments for students to study music on.

In the music classroom, we explore and perform music using the Orff-Schulwerk methodology. This methodology helps us in student enrichment to use their speech and language skills/knowledge to be catalysts in learning rhythm patterns, steady beat, artistic movement/dance, and singing.

Our school has 236 students in it, ranging from grades Pre K- 8th Grade. 57% of the student population is eligible for Free/Reduced Priced Meals, and 14% of our students are English Learners/Multilingual Learners. As a school community we believe that students develop deeper levels of understanding when they engage in first hand experiences, reflect on their learning, and learn how to express and support their ideas and knowledge. Having this as a cornerstone of our school identity, has lead to social emotional and mental health gains amongst the students. It’s our mission at our school to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed and let their voice be heard.
