FULLY FUNDED! Ms. R.'s classroom raised $390
This project is fully funded
I teach a full-day, self-contained preschool class in an elementary school outside a large city. The majority of students live in poverty.
My four-year-olds love to "read along" with stories. I want them to have a listening center at which several children can listen to and "read along" with books on tape or CD.
I will record myself reading various stories, nursery rhymes, poems and illustrated songs, along with cues to turn pages.
We make many simple, predictable books in our classroom using photographs or children's illustrations which are especially meaningful to them (First Day of School, Grandparents' Day, etc.) I know these will be favorites.
As children listen to, say, and follow the words with their fingers, they gain understanding of print concepts, confidence in their ability to learn to read, and experience the joy of reading for pleasure.
I am requesting a "listening station," a special table into which a tape/CD player and headphones fit for use and storage. Four children fit comfortably around it.
One of the great rewards of teaching preschool is knowing that I am providing experiences which will set the tone for my children's formal education. This listening center will help provide a positive first experience with literacy learning.
