My Project
First Grade is such an exciting time! There is tremendous growth, incredible development, and plenty of opportunities to be creative. My students may be young, but we set high goals and have lofty expectations. We love to explore, practice our math skills, sing and dance, go outside, play games, create art projects, and read. My goal is to encourage a love of learning among my students, and to prepare them for the future.
Alongside math and literacy skills, today's students must be able to use technology effectively.
In our classroom, students use resources like code.org, Ozobots, and Sphero robots, to learn basic programming and coding skills. Likewise, we utilize programs like Imagine Learning, Lexia, Zearn, and more to supplement math and language arts instruction. Finally, students use children-safe programs to do research, create art pieces, and play games. As you can imagine, twenty-six first graders on computers make a lot of noise.
Currently, my class uses a hodgepodge set of mismatched headphones. Many have frayed wires, broken earphones, or are too large. Adult sized headphones don't fit well over child ears and students often complain about hurting ears during computer work. Other students choose to go without or are forced to buy their own pair of headphones. This year, I have less headphones available than enrolled students. With a new class-set of headphones, my students will be able to participate in online learning without disturbing others.
