Sometimes duct tape isn't the answer!
I teach a kindergarten class in a large urban school in Maine. My twenty students represent just about every aspect of a diverse population.
This year, I am implementing a new Math program as well as incorporating some new practices in literacy instruction through a course I am taking with colleagues. I am finding that we are using charts and dry erase boards more than we ever have before.
The teaching easel that my students and I use is an old art easel and, although I have bound the legs with duct tape, it still wobbles when we write. I store materials we use under the easel in various containers on the floor. Locating materials and picking up the tipped over containers wastes time and interrupts the flow of our learning. I lean the dry erase board against it so when we do a chart, I have to move it off the easel! Our pocket chart stand is an old hand-me-down that also has been fortified with duct tape. The rings slide off the ends when I have to flip a chart and, although the students find that very entertaining, I find it quite frustrating!
I have felt, come budget time, that these items are "luxuries" when I prioritize our needs. I am now finding that with adjustments in my teaching practice, they are becoming more of a priority. Your help would make my teaching and my student's learning so much more efficient and effective!
