Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a public middle school in the Bronx serving grades 6-8. More than 89% of students receive free lunch. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures. Many of my students were born in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, another country, or have parents that were born outside of the U.S. About 34 % of our students are English Language Learners. This year, I'm teaching 8 different class sections (one 6th grade class, one 7th, and six 8th grade classes). A large number of my students have varying special needs (ADHD, ADD, Autism, Emotional Disturbance, Learning disability, etc.). I also facilitate an after school drama club program made up of students from each grade. My students are funny and intelligent, but many lack confidence and social-emotional skills. I love working with these students because they are going through a very important and challenging time in their lives. They are full of potential, and there is never a dull day!
The majority of my students have never had the opportunity to see a live theatre performance, or to be part of one.
I hope to change that, with your help, by putting on a school play!
My Project
This year is the first year our school has had a full-time drama program. Some talented students from each grade are currently working hard to put on a school production of the play 'Luna' by Ramon Esquival. However, we are currently missing the materials we need to make theatre magic happen!
The money donated for this project will go towards costumes, props, and set pieces needed for the show!
Having more materials for the performance will help give my young actors and actresses an extra boost of confidence and create a wonderful illusion for our young audience. Not only will the money raised for this project help my drama classes, but it will help our entire school community as we build our drama program!
