Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Music and Science. Have you ever wondered why our brains latch on to a catchy song on the radio and can't let it go? Or played a musical instrument and been fascinated by the mechanics of it's sound production? So have my students! Our band program is special because of the students who sit in our chairs and fill the room every day.

Our young musicians are highly inquisitive, and eager to learn about their instruments in depth!

Our school is located right below Charlotte, North Carolina, with lots of varied musical influence and opportunity. While the majority of our band members simply enjoy the classroom experience, several of our students go the extra mile to study privately and audition for honor groups and youth orchestras in the area.

While goals may differ, each of the children in our band program share a common interest; the love and passion for music! We strive to incorporate a variety of teaching techniques in order to reach every type of learner where they are. Technology in the music classroom allows our students to make the connection between music and the science of their instruments!

My Project

The use of a single chromatic tuner is an everyday occurrence in our middle school band room. After a group warm-up, it is imperative to spend time allowing students to train their ears by listening for accuracy of pitch both on their individual instruments and in comparison to the rest of the ensemble. This is typically accomplished in one of the following two ways; 1. Sound is produced through the speakers by way of a drone so that students can match pitch on their instrument and adjust as needed. 2. The tuner is projected onto the SMART Board so that each instrument family and individual musician has a visual representation of pitch in order to make the necessary adjustments. This is especially helpful in beginning band classes where pitch can be the most unstable, and these younger musicians can often rely heavily on a visual aid. Due to only owning one classroom device, the large number of students in one class, and brevity of the class period, creativity in planning is an absolute must!

By donating to our project, you will not only help with training the ears of over 350 young musicians, but allowing them to have a more in-depth understanding of the science of intonation and pitch through a steady visual aid!

Students will be able to focus on their individual pitch for a greater amount of time within the class period, further assisting in training the ear to identify when to make an adjustment on their instruments. In this technology literate world, steady interaction with such a useful device will increase their desire to learn and grow in the classroom!
