The Science of Segmenting and Blending

My Project

These materials will support my students in a whole group setting as well as conveniently taken out of the classroom in a container for intervention and enrichment small groups.

The shift to a fully backed science of reading classroom requires many hands on tools for kindergartners to understand words and their sounds.

To fully understand our words, we first need to break them down into sounds which is vital for early reading skills. These materials will tap into multiple learning modalities to ensure all learners understand. The segmenting trays will be used with the magnetic chips and wands to show sound deletion and blending when taking chips away with the wand. The word mapping paddles will not only incorporate handwriting, but will help my students see the letters, correlate a sound with the letter, and map unknown sounds or "heart" sounds that have irregular letter-sound correspondence. The CVC pop-it game as well as the push lights will help show my students a hands on way to segment sounds in a word when pushing in a letter or pushing on a light. Lastly, the slinkys are a fun and interactive way to not only segment sounds, but will help with the idea of blending sounds together in a smooth way when slowly stretching a slinky.

When pairing learning with fun and interactive materials, my students will surely make an honest connection to their learning.
