The Science of Music

Help me give my students a harp to further their STEAM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics integrated with the arts) Education.

My Students

The students of my various classrooms are a cohort of diverse, intelligent, and hardworking students from around the New York City Metropolitan area. Our school is a selective, public, college preparatory school with a focus on science, math, and engineering that provides a challenging academic experience that prepares students for careers in science, math, and engineering.

My classroom is not only a place of challenge and discovery but also a place where students come to de-stress and learn every day life skills.

Students in my general education classroom and after school Executive Function Classes are primarily from first-generation families and/or have learning disabilities. During the day my students learn about science and health. After school, they are learning how to be organized and communicative in order to develop a foundation that will allow them to be successful in their educational careers and beyond.

My Project

Music is a universal language. This harp will be used to teach science! Through the use of this musical instrument, students will learn how sound waves operate in order to produce sound. The harp is an excellent instrument to show students key physics concepts including: amplitude, wavelength, frequency, etc.

In my STEAM classroom (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics infused with the Arts) I take an interdisciplinary approach to teaching STEM and the arts in order to encompass all student learning styles and backgrounds.

These STEAM lessons are intended to not only teach science but also music. In addition, these lessons hope to break barriers with traditionally homogeneous representation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Unfortunately, STEM has not had a diverse representation, especially in terms of women and people of various races of the non dominant culture. With the integration of music, a language spoken by all, I hope to make more connections with my students so that they can be inspired to want to learn more about STEM, make careers or even just appreciate STEM fields, and change our current trajectory. The incorporation of music helps to provide a vehicle for students to better integrate with the material and to have a way for them to express themselves and make connections with experiences they have had that also are important to overall class learning.

Lastly, with decreased arts programs, the use of the harp allows me to simultaneously give my students some music education.
