Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a diverse Title I high school located in New York, housed within a campus of many other schools.
We are one of a handful of public high schools in NYC that only admit recent immigrants; many of our students enter the ninth grade just a few days or weeks after first moving to the U.S.
Our students come from over thirty countries around the world -- Yemen, Honduras, Tibet, China, the Ivory Coast, and Haiti, to name a few. They also speak well over thirty different languages, all at different levels of English language proficiency. All of our students learn English through their content courses such as math, science, literature, social studies, dance, and art. They work together collaboratively to help one another with both their language skills and their understanding of life in this new country.
My Project
My students are studying the science of moving objects using the three Laws of Motion. However, before we can study the three Laws of Motion, my students will first learn the importance of observation - observation is essential in science. Scientists use observation to collect and record data. This recorded data enables scientist to construct and test hypotheses and theories.
Sir Isaac Newton came up with the three Laws of Motion to describe how things move scientifically.
When a baseball is pitched, hit and flies in the air, one or more of the physical principles formulated by Sir Isaac Newton act on it. Therefore, in order to observe the science of a moving object, we are planning a class trip to attend a live baseball game at Yankee Stadium!
Before the game, students will generate their own questions about the game. Questions can be related to rules, equipment, fans, food, etc. My students will be reminded that their questions need to be created so that they can be answered through investigation and observation during the game. During the game my students will write down their observations related to their questions. At the conclusion of the game, students will share their observations.
