This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are between eight and ten. I have students that are retainees from third grade last year mixed with new incoming third graders. I have three students new to the country for the first time. I have ten that are in ESE and will be pulled out for consultation. I have four that are Resource, the ESE teacher will come into the class as a facilitator. As of Friday, we took our 1st Diagnostic assessment. Of the twenty-two students, only one is at grade 2 level. two students are at grade 1 level, and the rest of my students are on a Kindergarten grade level. By no means is this is upsetting to me, I’m humbled and grateful for my job and them but it will be very challenging. My students are kind and helpful to their peers and I’m blessed to have such a great group of children.
My Project
The books will help them read more while closing the gap to achievement. It will build self-esteem and give them a sense of motivation to explore places in books. Students will read daily in class and at home. I will set up a check out system so students can take the books home to read. They will be required to keep a running record of all the books they read. This will allow both the teacher, students, and parents to be accountable. My classroom library will be a great place for them to begin their journey to become better readers.
