My Students
Can you imagine the impact of prepping for AP level work in 6th grade? So many students slog through a dumbed down curriculum that fails to challenge or inspire them, no wonder they dread school. But, Document Based Questions (DBQs) are the kind of challenging mystery that fuels a love of learning.
Our students are from a neighborhood where the expectations have been low, the environment terrifying, and the outlook bleak.
Despite these difficulties, these very special students have signed up for an extended school day, more homework, mandatory band participation and the highest of expectations so that they can climb the mountain to college. Our students know that college is the key to a bright future and they cheerfully do all the extra things that it takes to be successful. All they ask from me is that I make my class challenging and interesting so that they can get excited about their day. I believe that with these DBQ resources, I can faithfully execute my duty for them.
My Project
Though Document Based Questions might not sound like the flashiest, hippest tool out there, they are an amazing tool that immerse students in history and a confronts them with real mysteries of our past. With the resources in this binder, we will get our kids excitedly plowing through complicated texts, thinking critically and writing at the highest of all possible levels. Though the students will be doing all of these great things, they will think that they are just solving a cool mystery in a really independent, engaging way. It's the best of all worlds for our students.
At my school, we are not just happy with our students getting to college, we need them getting through college so that they can change the destinies of their families and their communities.
A resource like the DBQ will provide our students with the kind of rigorous course work that they will need to be successful at the country's best colleges.
