My students need a leveled classroom library to continue to grow as readers. They need a space in the room that is inviting and calming, where they can enjoy the leveled books with each other.

My Students
My students walk into our classroom everyday with an "I can" attitude. It isn't always easy for them to remember to keep believing they can because the world tells them they can't due to their disabilities. It is my goal to help them gain the tools they need so that when they walk out of my classroom, they are confident in themselves and the world around them.
I work in a special needs school, for children with moderate-to-severe, or multiple disabilities, many of whom come from bilingual homes and all of whom receive free breakfast and lunch.
Our school serves K - 5 and provides our special needs students with tools to become as independent as possible, as well as strategies to achieve in academic, social, and professional settings in their future.
My Project
Our students have been working hard on foundational literacy skills and they are now ready to read independently. They need a leveled library in the classroom so that they can practice their phonics skills with books they can relate to, as well as books that spark their interests. My students currently do not have a space where they can go to pick out a book on their reading level and sit down to enjoy it independently or with a friend. We have been teaching foundational literacy skills, as well as social-emotional skills to our students, and this classroom library would give them the opportunity to practice the sharing and group socialization skills they have been learning, as well as continue to build upon their reading.
With this classroom Reading Lounge, my classroom staff and I hope that our students can continue to grow as readers, as students, and as friends.
Each day, we rotate through centers and the library would give students a space and time for "Reading Lounge." The students know their independent reading level and will practice reading by themselves after they spend time in the "Guided Reading" center with an adult. The books are leveled so that each child will have a book that is "just right" for his or her reading level, clearly marked and labeled in the bins that are included. The rug and couch will create a calming and relaxing environment for our students enjoy their books.
Our hope is that students progress through the levels as they gain both the skills and the confidence to read on their own. They are excited and curious about the world around them and we would love to be able to give them the resources they need to explore and discover through reading.
