My Students
We are a full inclusion 6th grade with students of diverse academic abilities and backgrounds. Some students have lived in Hawaii their entire lives and others are from military families that move every few years. Our school is known for a kind and caring school culture and our sixth grade students are excellent role models for their K-5 peers.
Inquiry based learning is central in our classroom.
We focus on real world problems in Math and Science whenever possible. The students engage in authentic discussions during book club and preparations for philosophical chairs. They also utilize technology to communicate their learning with others. Our goal is to instill a growth mindset, develop independence, and spark a love for learning before we send these students off to middle school.
My Project
Collaborative groups that consistently change are an important part of our classroom. Students need to move their chairs into different settings throughout the day. Currently, we have a mix of sturdy chairs that are very heavy and light chairs that are too small for most sixth graders.
Quality chairs that physically support our students will lead to more effective learning.
Our students will use the chairs to sit in small groups with teachers, meet with peers, and quietly work independently. We need comfortable chairs that are light weight so that all our students can sit in any chair and transport them easily.
