This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an urban high school that has a lack of necessary materials and resources for our students to thrive. Our neighborhood is high poverty and we are considered to be one of the most challenging schools in our area. We have serious attendance problems and many students who are not engaged in learning.

I have taught here for eighteen years and enjoy the creative spirit of my students.

Over the years, I have had the pleasure of seeing my students discover talents they never knew they had. I strive to expose them to as many diversified, artistic experiences as I can.

In our present situation of teaching with a hybrid model, all of my students are working with an art program on their laptops. This is challenging for everyone and has changed our way of learning.

My Project

There is nothing better than having the right materials to work with. Our students are about to go remote and once again have the challenge of creating art from home. These materials will help students be successful and stay engaged in visual arts.

I know from our experience last spring and currently this fall, most students do not have drawing materials or funds to purchase what they need.

They have the use of a school issued touchscreen laptop which do not come with a stylus. Having a stylus to use with the art program would give students access to a good drawing platform and color palette. The pads of paper and crayons are a benefit for students who prefer this medium. I also have them draw on paper and then load the drawing into the art program to add colors and effects.
