This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the great opportunity of teaching US History to a highly motivated and very capable group of 8th graders.
Among the many important topics in US History, one of paramount importance is the issue of slavery. Unfortunately, the textbook we are required to use was written in such a way that the topic of slavery is spread haphazardly throughout the first half of the book. This is not a format conducive to learning. Students often learn better when topics are tied together with some kind of connection.
I believe my students would gain a much better understanding of US History by reading the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. This book would allow them to connect the cultures of the North and South in the time period leading up to the Civil war.
US History is an amazing subject. Very often, the textbook simply does not cover a topic very well. Donors like you allow my students to have access to a much better education.
