Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This gifted first-grade class is a group of 30 amazing six and seven years old students that attend a neighborhood school. Their families work hard and value education. Parents have told me that when their child learns, they learn too. Parents love hearing from their children what they did in school. They want the best for their children. The families are diverse economically and ethnically. Some families are from Mexico, Poland, and Asia. Some children are from families that have lived in Chicago for three generations. The children come to school eager and ready to learn. They are active and love hands-on learning and creating images to show off what they have learned. They are happy and engaged learners.
They are natural storytellers.
They love books and reading. They love reading to each other. I want to keep their passion for reading alive. Unfortunately, Common Core standards require first graders to summarize, tell the main idea and important details. No first grader has ever longed to do that. However, presenting a puppet show for your friends and then asking them the main idea and details from your puppet show is far more exciting.
My Project
Young children love to read and perform for an audience. Students will read the books from the library collections and retell the story to the class through their puppets.
The Retell Spell will make retelling a story magically fun by creating puppets with the craft materials.
The googly eyes, feathers, tissue paper, the paint will be the medium for character study. We have a puppet theater in class to present the stories in puppet show form. Working in groups, students will choose a book, write a simple script, and create puppet characters. The students will meet the standard of retelling the story using their creativity and imagination.
