The Rest Our Rug Deserves

My students need a new Elephant and Piggie carpet to give our old carpet the rest it deserves.

My Students

Our school will be entering its 10th year come this September. In our pre-K class, that means over 180 students will have come and gone. Along with that, many other students have called our room home for enrichment classes, after school programs, and summer camp.

Families send their precious children to our class everyday for us to help them take those first steps towards accomplishing great feats.

Children make this room their home for however long the stay and miss it dearly when they move on. It's something we take pride in and hope to continue doing what we love to do and that's nurture their love for learning.

I've been teaching at my first and current school for six years when the new school year approaches. I still remember when I passionately interviewed and conducted the demo lesson for the opening. With the support from my predecessor, the teaching job was mine to lose. It was a dream position to teach in the same neighborhood I grew up in. It was my way to give back to the community that offered me the opportunities that got me where I am today.

My Project

Our classroom has seen a lot of changes since it first opened up 10 years ago, but one thing has remained a constant and that's our faithful classroom rug. It has seated many students over the decade for morning meetings, whole group discussions, read alouds, and closing circles. It has seen it's fair share of spills from water to milk and has collected many crumbs of the snacks of our lively kids. We've made ice cream, pizza, slime, play dough, and many memories together. Although the children may be different from year to year, the laughter and smiles were always the same.

Our green carpet is special to us.

It is very special to me. Before the start of each school year, I would walk into my classroom and flip each corner of the rug to find a special message left for me back in 2012. It was a message from Ms. Merril and it stated "Good Luck, Mr. Andy :)" I honor it at it as a way to bless the new school year.

So many memories has been created and shared on that carpet. It is finally time to give the worn carpet the proper rest it deserves after a decade of service and create memories on a brand new carpet. The new rug would fit perfectly in our classroom. Every year, our kids fall in love with the Mo Willems books. They are mesmerized when they listen to stories of the Pigeon's silly requests, the great friendship of Elephant and Piggie, and the adventures of Knuffle Bunny. The Mo Willems themed rug will help our kids adjust quickly to the new school setting and help kick the year off to an amazing start.
