Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The recycling in my house was imposed by my kids." said Spanish actor Antonio Banderas. My students can be empowered to uplift their community! We need to teach by example: waste and litter isn't acceptable and that we need to work together to help our planet by making recycling cool at school!

My students are grades 6-8 in a high-poverty urban public school.

They are all ethnically Latino and many are English Learners. The kids are eager to help out, but have limited opportunities to positively impact their school and community. The students are surrounded by signs of poverty and economic depression. This project will focus on how they can change their world for the better through the power of recycling!

My Project

This project will start a school-wide movement! The requested resources: a mobile recyclable collection station operated by students who will be on a mission to stop waste and get kids (and staff) recycling at school and in the community. The students will become "THE RECYCLISTS." They will take turns riding the specially equipped bicycle and trailer around campus, chanting and rapping, during recess and lunch periods to collect plastic and aluminum and teach peers the importance of recycling. They will become a presence on campus and inspire a "no-waste-mentality" that will positively influence the school and greater community. Funds gained from recycling will be reinvested to support expansion of the program and growth of the movement! Student will learn to become environmental advocates and community organizers. They will develop a sense of agency to change the world. Students will develop social and communication skills and will become positive role-models in their community.

Pollution is a major issue in this poverty stricken community.

Students do not like to live in an area known as "ghetto" because of these conditions. This program will make a positive impact on littering and waste on campus and will permeate outward. The Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation will match 50% for projects in high poverty schools that offer students hands-on engagement with recycling, waste reduction and projects focused on solutions to plastic pollution.
