it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
One of the things students love the most about music class is getting to play instruments and being able to dance. Our school community is very diverse. Many of them have family from Spanish speaking regions that include Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. It is very important for me to make my music lessons relevant and enjoyable from a cultural perspective so that students can connect what they learn to their background knowledge coming from home.
My students should be able to learn about music from different cultures, not only by listening to good recordings, but by being allowed to to play on authentic instruments.
For this reason, I am requesting instruments that are traditionally used for Merengue, which originates from the Dominican Republic. This Latin musical style is played using a Tambora, which is a drum played with hands and sticks, a guira, which is a scraper, and an accordion. These instruments will be used to teach my students about this unique style of music and dance. The dance is very easy to learn, since it is basically stepping on the beat.
Having these instruments in my classroom will allow students to dive deep into this style of music, explore the cultural connections behind it, and it will keep them engaged and excited about participating in the activities that go along with it. I expect to see my students enjoy creating with them, and they will be used throughout all classes in performances and lessons for years to come.
