My Students
My classroom is filled with reluctant readers. I work with them to find their interests and show them how they can use these interests to find books that they'll enjoy. Once they find one, they're in! They admit to not reading and often say they do not like to read in the beginning of the school year. It is my goal to have each of them end the school year as readers, not because someone told them they had to, but because they enjoy it.
I teach English learners, some of whom are newcomers to the country and speak no English and others who have been here a limited amount of time and speak a little English.
We work all year to learn how to grow from failure and use it to get a step closer to success. Many of my students come to me with a sense of apathy formed from the lack of experiences of academic success in the past. We're a Title I school with more than 80% of our students classified as economically disadvantaged.
My Project
The storage baskets will give my students a place to store their self-selected books in the classroom. The pencil sharpener will ensure that every pencil is sharp and ready to write. The mesh pencil holder will be used to store dry erase markers and erasers for easy access at the whiteboard.
The dry erase board will be mounted on the wall to add an extra place around the room where students can demonstrate their thinking and watch me model skills as well.
The paper tray is going to be a designated place for students to turn in papers, while the jumbo dry erase weekly planner will be used to ensure students keep up with the week at a glance, quickly and easily.
