I teach 6th grade Language Arts in a high need community. My students are, on average, two grades below level. English is a second language for many of my students, making Language Arts even harder for them to succeed in.
My students would rather be anywhere else in the world than in class with us when it is time to read. For them, reading is a painful experience. However, even though they are below grade level, we need to focus on 6th grade texts to help bring them up to speed so they can compete with their peers at other schools. Without the ability to read on grade level, my students cannot be successful in any of their classes. They do not need any other obstacles in their path to great achievement.
We need 30 copies of "The Westing Game" in our classroom. If the students can come to class eager to finish a book, they will change their minds about reading! Reading will not be such a painful process for them. This will help them be successful not just in reading, but in all of their subjects.
You will make it possible for my students to put themselves on the road to success with your donation. My students will be able to achieve great things when they put their minds and their talents towards reading - and this will be their first step.
