My Students
Resilience, the most intriguing trait that my students have shown every single day of their lives. Faced with daily trauma and never ending gun violence -trapped in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country- my students navigate the rugged terrain just to make it to school without physical harm. Some are without stable shelter, not enough food while managing to live well below the poverty line; however, they show up every single day in order to succeed.
My students are motivated more than any group of individual that I have ever encountered because their number one priority is to get away.
They refuse to be the next statistic and they are putting their best foot forward to change the landscape for themselves and their families.
My Project
Did you know that high school athletes are more likely than non-athletes to attend college and get degrees? I didn't either until I did some research, but I do know that every student that is a part of athletics at my school has been accepted into a college or university.
Athletics is an outlet for my students to take their minds away from the trauma and disappointments that they face every single day.
Through athletics, my students learn to set goals, practice leadership, deal with adversity, build self-esteem, and be accountable. Athletics at Manley helps build respectable, hard-working young men and women in a community where it is often non-existent.
When you have to constantly focus on where your next meal will come from and which path you need to take home so you aren't caught in the cross-fire of a gang war, you need a place to escape and keep you focused. Those hours in the gym, or on the field, gives you that opportunity to detach and put you in a place that only athletics can take you.
The problem is our school has a very small athletic budget and limited resources. We don't have enough basketballs for the boys and girls team to hold efficient practices. The basketballs, storage cage and the pump will help us have more efficient efficient practices and provide security to keep the balls from being stolen. The SKLZ items will allow us to make skill training better, and the whistles and coaches boards/books will be utilized by coaches to manage games and practice. This project is just one way to bring back the luster to a sleeping giant.
