My Students
I teach English language arts at an urban charter school, which serves a population of students that come from the worst forms of poverty.
Throughout their school years, many of my economically-disadvantaged students are at least two grade levels behind in their reading skill development.
My high school students also generally lack the confidence that they can succeed in college (if they dare to go).
My Project
I'd like to incorporate Edgar Allan Poe's stories and poems into my classroom teaching. Not only is his writing written at a college-age reading level which would enhance both my students' reading and critical thinking skills, but it is also a high-interest author for my reluctant readers. Their engagement with Poe's literature would both prepare my students for college and foster confidence in my students as readers.
Not only does every donation brings my students closer to fulfilling their individual promise--a better future for themselves and their families through education, but it also gives hope and inspiration to our classroom.
